What is dog clutches?

A dog clutch is a type of mechanical clutch used in manual transmissions that allows for quick and easy shifting of gears. It works by engaging or disengaging the teeth, or "dogs," on the sides of the clutch with matching teeth on the gears, locking them together or allowing them to rotate independently.

Dog clutches are typically used in racing or high-performance applications where quick and precise gear changes are necessary, as they are capable of engaging very quickly and with minimal slippage. They are also commonly found in motorcycles, where their compact size and light weight make them an ideal choice.

However, dog clutches can be sensitive to wear and damage if not properly maintained or used, and can be prone to "false shifts" if the gears are not perfectly aligned when shifting. Additionally, they may not be as smooth or quiet as other types of clutches, and can be difficult for inexperienced drivers to use effectively.
